Marine Electrical Basics and Advanced course FAQ
What does the Marine Electrical course cover?
We start with the basics, assuming you cannot “spell” electricity to get everyone on the same sheet. The first morning covers electrical theory to understand systems, maintenance and some basic trouble shooting.
Is the course hands-on or lecture?
Short answer, both are used to teach the course. We start with classroom lecture on a certain concept then reinforce that with hands on stations. The goal is to get you building, cutting, and using your meter to diagnose marine electrical systems.
What kind of hands-on stations do you use?
You will use a variety of marine electrical connectors and marine electrical products to build simple circuits then advance to more complex DC circuits.
During the level two course you will dig deeper into troubleshooting electrical failures while you design and install new equipment and circuitry.
All of this is done with 2 instructors in small groups so we can not only guide you to success but allow some mistakes along the way to increase learning. We would rather you make mistakes with our parts then on your vessel.
Do you go over AC generators?
Yes, especially in level two we will talk about many marine generators with special attention on limitations, maintenance, loads, and demands.
What about my boat…can we talk about my electrical system?
That is part of many of the discussion. Our instructors are very experienced…odds are they have been on a like vessel or seen something similar. Many times, our students provide good teaching points related to the current topic from their vessel.
What time is the class? What do I bring?
Electrical level one is taught from 9:00 - 4:00 on Saturday and Sunday. Level 2 is taught the same hours on Monday - Tuesday. We take 10min breaks as needed with an hour for lunch. You can bring your lunch or there are plenty of nice restaurants right here in Eastport.
All you need for class is a notebook and good attitude! We provide the textbook and handouts with all electrical flow diagrams required for the course.
When is the class taught?
We run the courses October thru February…sometimes we will run one in March depending on demand. Most if not all of these course book up way in advance. We recommend not waiting till the last minute if you want a specific date. For the level two course we cut the number of students down to 8-10.
Why take the electrical courses?
These courses provides a jump start to troubleshoot your repairs, upgrade your systems and understand how the systems on your vessel are interdependent. Everything on your vessel depends on some type of electrical concept…. demystify the unknown!
